Subject: dancing in the aisles

so, this weekend was the jazz festival in waterloo. matt and i went down, and hung out with danna's parents. was super nice. we heard a latin jazz band - muy bien! anyway, what made me think of you was seeing the people trying to dance in their seats without losing control. it reminded me of your journal entry on the little girl at a music fest, who was dancing like no one was watching, and didn't care if they were.

there really are some strange customs in our society: music is supposed to inspire us, to move our souls. yet, we are frowned upon for moving our bodies with it. the rythms of latin music don't allow us to sit still; yet, when we move, we have to maintain such tight control over our bodies. it doesn't matter if we really don't care about the people watching us, we still settle for toe-tapping, at the exclusion of all else.

as if that weren't sad enough, we sit in our seats, and smile at the people who are up dancing - we know they are having a good time. why can't we? i, too, sat and toe-tapped, smiling at those who let the music move them. i know that they got more out of it than i did, yet i couldn't just get up and dance.

sigh.
